Spiritual Boot Camp: 6 Spiritual Gifts (Part 2)

Last week we talked about the gifts of the Spirit. We talked about the importance of knowing your gifts that the Lord has given you, and that everyone does have a gift from the Lord. Hopefully you were able to go and take some sort of quiz, or talk to some people and narrow down what gift or gifts you may have. I have put together a list of the gifts, how they work, and a good way to start practicing what God has given you!

Shepherding:

This is not pastoring, but pastors should have this gift. This should not just be used by the pastor but in a lot of places in the church and in life. In the Bible, the word ‘shepherd’ is used when it talks about pastors, overseers, deacons, elders, and leaders.

Some words to that to think of are being an overseer, training people, caring for the needs of others.

As a shepherd you should dig into the speaking gifts (evangelist, prophet, teacher, exhorter)

The goal is to see others learn and grow in the Lord.

Don’t be afraid or discouraged to start small: teaching Sunday school is just as important as of jumping into being an executive pastor.

Please remember to let others help you.

Things that satan will try to use: discouragement, pride. Small beginnings may bring discouragement and that might cause you to want to quit. Keep going, God will bring you into what He has for you! Don’t let pride cloud your judgment. Pride can come in easily when you begin to get elevated, please stay humble and let the Lord lead you.

Make sure your relationship with Jesus is #1, then your relationship with spouse/ family, then using this gift. Never loses this order.

Get moving!

People in the Bible who are using this gift: Paul, Timothy, Priscilla and Aquila (1 Cor. 16:19, Rom. 16:3-4)

Mercy giving:

This is the desire to serve God by identifying with and comforting those who are in distress

This is empathy, this is feel with others, not just for others. Act out of love. Keep your heart open to the broken down people. James 1:27

Be carful to not let others use you. Open your heart to others but make sure you are not letting people take advantage of your kind heart.

Be aware that Satan is going to ty to get you to gossip. Open your heart and close your mouth to others.

Look into getting trained more in counseling and how to empathize with others without letting it come home with you.

Don’t let the enemy attack you in areas of pride, complaining, and gossip.

Ways you can get involved by being a youth worker, councilor, joining the welcome team, or newcomer team at church.

You see this in the Bible when Jesus wept for Lazarus even though He knew He was going to raise Lazarus from the dead (John 11:35). Jesus can sympathize with us because He has been tempted in all things (Hebrews 4:15).

Serving:

This is t the same word for “helps” in 1 Corinthians 12:28.

You have the desire to serve God by helping peoples physical and spiritual needs.

This is a real and blessed gift. This is not just stacking chairs. This is not just what people put on you when you can’t do anything else. This is just as important as the pastor. If a church doesn’t have someone who loves to server and loves to do what needs to be done, a church wont function.

These are people who are faithful and devoted to the ministry and task.

It is ok to say no. Please learn how to say no.

Learn how to have a healthy work/ life balance. Make sure you do not neglect your needs or the needs of your family.

Be aware that the enemy is going to want to attack you with pride. It is so easy to be serving and then step back and complain that no one else is doing anything. That might not be their gift. But if your gifting is not serving, that doesn’t mean you can sit back and let every one else take out the trash or do the vacuuming.

Take a look at Martha in the Bible!

Teaching:

Have the desire to love God by making His word clear with accuracy.

This is a deep love to explain what the Bible says to others. This could be just as simple as a mom or dad teaching their kids how to read the Bible, a youth group leader trying to get middle schoolers getting pumped about scripture, or a pastor who is teaching their congregation how to dig in deep.

Not all pastors that are out there right now are not teaching.

Jump into areas where you teach. Keep practicing! Write sermons, write blogs, write chapters, write outlines. Dig into scripture.

All speaking gifts should go back to this as well

Be Berrian (Acts17:11). Be critical of bad doctrine, but not on different doctrine.

Don’t have to preach the Bible to use this gift. Writing, teaching dance, school…

Look at Apollos, Peter, and Paul in the Bible.

Exhortation:

This is the desire to motivating others to action in the Lord.

This is someone who is a good counselor. You are someone who is not afraid to call someone you love out on their sin. Please learn how to boldly do this but do this in LOVE! This is not a gifting to just call people out all the time. This is someone who comes alongside someone and helps them to walk in the Lord and out of the sin they are living in.

This is showing how scripture relates to a persons specific situation. Making the Bible come alive to someone

Using scripture to back up what you are saying, rather than starting with scripture

Good about helping people and not letting it drag you down at home.

Be aware of the attacks from the enemy: seeing people as projects, pride, easy to encourage people into the wrong things because you are persuasive, discouragement if there is not progress seen.

Administration:

This is the desire to serve God through organizing, administration, promoting, and leadership.

This is more of a physical gift but this is just as much given by the Spirit and utilized by the Spirit just as the other gifts. This is not just a paper pusher for the church

Get involved in areas of planning events, organizing information, preparing the background stuff.

Be aware that you might make dissuasions based on logic and not scripture, logic is good but it should always be backed by scripture.

Don’t let the enemy attack you in areas of pride, selfishness, blame shifting, needing to always be right, anger to those who disagree with you or your plans

Prophecy

This doesn’t mean you can see the future. There are two types of prophecy seen in scripture, foretelling and fourth telling. Foretelling is when you do see what God is going to do in a person, a people, or a nation’s future. The book of revelation is a prophecy of what will come at the end of the world. God still uses this type of prophecy and I don’t think is is bad to pray for this type.

We see in scripture and in the world today fourth telling. This is speaking fourth the mind of God. This is boldly preaching and teaching God’s word to people.

Preaching can be prophecy but it might not be.

This is more of the pointed word from God to someone. You are very discerning. Bold in the way you point out sin and help people come to a place of repentance.

Spirit given desire to proclaim the truth.

Willing to do anything to stand up for what is right.

Remember to “speak the truth in love” Eph. 4:15

Don’t let Satan attack you in areas of having a lack of compassion, pride, self righteousness.

Great for counseling one on one but really needs to be paired with mercy, grace, love and compassion.

I would suggest reading through some of the Old Testament Prophets. See the difference in approach in Jeremiah and Jonah. Daniel and Isaiah, look at minor prophets. Look at John the Baptist. Deborah was a judge and a prophetess. Timothy had four daughters that prophesied.

These are not the only gifts. These are more of the practical gifting or the physical gifting. There are still healings, toughs, prophesy, wisdom, knowledge. These are gifts that come from being filled with the Holy Spirit. All the gifts come from God, but you can’t do these on your own. There are great teachers and great administrators that don’t know Jesus. Pray for these. Ask for opportunity to use them. The other gifts, pray for opportunity to dig into and be put into a position to practice them.

What is the Holy Spirit showing you? What where the highlights?

What are you going to do about it?

How can we help you?
