The Study of Acts: Chapter 3

Before you read this post, I encourage you to read through Acts 3 and answer the following questions:

What miracles have you seen the Lord do in your life?

Do you think God can do miracles through you? Why or why not?

What is the point of miracles? Why does God do miracles?

Chapter three is a beautiful chapter giving us a great example of the work and power of the Holy Spirit. We start off by seeing a miracle happen through Peter and John and then we see Peter take the opportunity of the miracle to share the Gospel. This is such a cool miracle. There is a man who can not walk and he would sit by the temple and ask people for money. He was lame since he was born and people would carry him to the temple so he could ask for money. Peter and John were going to the temple to pray and they saw this man. Peter focuses on this man and says “look at us [...], I have no silver and gold but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk! (Acts 3:4,6)”. When Peter got his attention, the man thought he was going to receive money, but Peter had the faith and the boldness to let the Holy Spirit lead. This man was able to stand and walk for the first time in his life because Peter had the faith that the Holy Spirit was going to heal him. He had the authority in the name of Jesus and the power in the Holy Spirit, Peter just had to proclaim that.

We read stories like this in the bible and we think that is crazy and awesome, but we rarely have the faith to step out and pray for someone like that. I know that if I was in that situation, I might have prayed to ask God to provide for this man financially, but would I have the faith to pray big prayers as Peter prayed? I know a year ago I wouldn’t have had the boldness or the faith, but the Lord is bringing me into a deeper place and He has shown me that he wants to do miracles like this through me and through you. I can pray, in faith, that my friend’s brother will be able to walk again after the car accident that put him in a wheelchair. Have I seen healing to this scale? Not yet, but this story in Acts three shows me that my God can do this miracle so I will not stop praying to see it happen!

What is a big prayer that you are praying? What impossible thing are you asking God to intervene in?

After people saw this man who they knew was not able to walk “leaping and walking and praising God (Acts 3:8)”, people wanted to know how it happened. This gave Peter the opportunity to preach the good news of Jesus to these people. Peter could have either taken the glory for himself or not said anything but instead, he gave the glory to God. He walks the crowd through the history of how the God of Abraham gave words to the prophets about the Messiah that He was going to send to them. He talked to them about how they were given the Messiah and they killed him. Even though they killed Jesus, Peter talked to the people about how that was prophesied to happen and He rose again.

What I love about Peter’s sermon is that he was able to share the Gospel because he healed the lame man. If Peter didn’t heal the man, the people would not have been interested in Peter and what he had to say. Praying for healing for someone is a great segue into sharing Jesus with people. If you walked up to someone on the street and asked if they knew Jesus, they probably wouldn't talk to you. But if you walked up to someone and asked if you could pray for healing for them, most likely, they won’t tell you no. Once you have their attention in prayer, then you have more of an open door to be able to share the Gospel with them.

This week be on the lookout for someone you can pray for when you are out and about!!
