The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the LORD’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death (Exodus 16:3).”

The Israelites fled to Egypt to live in exile due to famine. They were were enslaved by the Egyptians and endured years of torture and bondage. The Lord heard their cries for freedom, to be liberated and to be set free. He answered their prayers by sending Moses, the one set apart to lead them out of exile in Egypt to the promised land. They endured great suffering in Egypt and relied solely on the Lord’s intervention to free them. Once they were freed from Egypt the Lord carefully and kindly led them through the wilderness to the promised land. Throughout the journey in the wilderness the Lord answered each of their complaints with miraculous provision. The Israelites discontentment, entitlement and lack of faith in the Lord lead them to believe they were better off if they were never freed from Egypt. Their enslavement in Egypt was reliable, they knew what to expect.. They craved and yearned for what was familiar even if it meant sacrificing their freedom.

This production exposes the self realization of our position as a prisoner to our own sin. The realization that we are trapped in what seems like a never-ending pit of anxiety, depression, addiction and fear. The pieces draw the deep pain and grief out of the shadows and shine a light on the suffocating isolation that we often drown ourselves in. This production draws a parallel between the captivity of the Israelites and our own modern day enslavement. What it takes to truly be set free, the reality of relapsing and the power of deliverance and healing.

This production integrates modern, hard hitting jazz, contemporary hip hop pointe, and rhythmic tap.
